The Japan Society for Leisure and Recreation Studies (JSLRS) is organizing this international conference as a platform to bring together experts in various fields of leisure and recreation. By bringing together knowledge from various fields, the conference will ask how the meaning and function of leisure and recreation can be better understood in order to overcome the various crises in today’s global situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The world today faces various crises, resulting in a highly unstable situation. In this context, how does the meaning and role of leisure and recreation change, or remain the same, along with the responsibilities of researchers and practitioners in this field?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Leisure and recreation are believed to be fundamentally connected to the essence of humanity, yet their manifestations can vary significantly depending on the era, society, and groups involved. As ideals face the challenges of reality, there is a constant pursuit of practical knowledge to explore the ideal forms they should take. We aim to foster intellectual exchange among researchers and practitioners from various regions, societies, cultures, and fields to question the mission of leisure and recreation in this period of change. Through this conference, we hope to promote the sharing of diverse perspectives and experiences, and to explore together the role of leisure and recreation in times of crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We are witnessing significant, complex, and structural changes across various domains and frameworks, including the liberal economy, democratic politics, global environment, natural resources, technology, media and communication, family and community life, and the education system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Historically, leisure and recreation have often been neglected during times of social crisis, which has sometimes exacerbated the situation. As researchers and practitioners in the field of leisure and recreation, our perspectives and approaches may vary depending on the area and the realities of the regions and societies we face. However, especially in times of crisis, we must not lose sight of what is truly important to humanity and strive to mitigate risks. We hope to share our important insights, however small or fragile they may be, and promote mutual exploration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
